Germany bans Turkish IHH charity over Hamas links
(WJC)–Germany’s government has banned the Turkish organization IHH following evidence that it collects donations for Hamas-related ‘welfare’ projects in the Gaza Strip. Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière said in a statement that the International Humanitarian Relief Organization was banned because it had used charitable donations to support Hamas activities while presenting IHH activities to donors as humanitarian help. De Maizière said organizations that directly or indirectly worked against Israel’s right to exist, such as Hamas, had no right to be active in Germany.
“The IHH has, under the cover of humanitarian aid, supported Gaza Strip-based so-called social associations which are attributable to Hamas, for a long period of time and to a considerable financial extent,” the interior minister declared in a statement. “Hamas employs acts of violence against Israel and Israeli citizens and therefore compromises a peaceful settlement between the Israeli and Palestinian people.”
The IHH was one of the main organizers of the Gaza flotilla. During an IDF raid in May, nine Turkish activists aboard one of the six ships were killed. The charity is considered a terrorist organization by a number of bodies has been accused of maintaining ties with a number of terror organizations.
The Islamist IHH was founded in the mid-1990s to provide aid to Bosnian Muslims and was initially registered in Frankfurt, Germany. The European Jewish Congress and other Jewish groups had called for a ban of the charity.

CNN editor sacked after praising Hezbollah-linked Muslim cleric
(WJC)–The US news broadcaster CNN has fired its Middle East Editor Octavia Nasr after she had said positive things about a Muslim cleric associated with Hezbollah. Nasr was forced to leave her position after calling Fadlallah a “giant” in a Twitter post following his death last weekend. CNN and Nasr had called the tweet an “error in judgment”, but an internal CNN memo leaked to the media a day after that statement said Nasr’s “credibility in her position as senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs has been compromised going forward.”
Jewish groups had protested the tweet, noting Fadlallah’s role in founding Hezbollah, in praising deadly terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians, and in denying the Holocaust. However, the Anti-Defamation League, said it was satisfied with the statements of regret from Nasr and CNN and did not call for her firing. Nasr explained in a blog post that she did not respect Fadlallah’s record, noting that as a Lebanese Christian, she had lost relatives to Hezbollah attacks while he was a leader of the organization in the 1980s. She added that he had pressed for women’s rights and had slammed Hezbollah’s closeness to Iran in recent years, a position that led the movement to marginalize the cleric.
“I used the words ‘respect’ and ‘sad’ because to me, as a Middle Eastern woman, Fadlallah took a contrarian and pioneering stand among Shia clerics on woman’s rights,” Nasr wrote. “He called for the abolition of the tribal system of ‘honor killing.’ He called the practice primitive and non-productive. He warned Muslim men that abuse of women was against Islam.”
Britain’s ambassador in Beirut, France Guy, also praised the late cleric. In her blog, which is part of the Foreign Office website, she wrote about the “passing of a decent man,” and that meeting with Fadlallah “you would leave his presence feeling a better person.” Guy went on to state: “The world needs more men like him willing to reach out across faiths, acknowledging the reality of the modern world and daring to confront old constraints.”
The British Foreign Office issued a statement saying that the ambassador had “expressed a personal view on Sheikh Sayyed Fadlallah, describing the man as she knew him. We welcomed his progressive views on women’s rights and interfaith dialogue, but also had profound disagreements – especially over his statements advocating attacks on Israel.”

‘NaziSexyMouse’ poster causes outrage in Poland
(WJC)–A huge poster of a Nazi swastika behind a naked pin-up model clad only in a Mickey Mouse-mask and stretched across a building has stirred controversy in Poland. A new art gallery in the western city of Poznan is using the work titled ‘NaziSexyMouse’ by Italian artist Max Papeschi to advertise an exhibition.
A local city councilor has pursued legal action, saying the artifact violated a law banning the display of Nazi symbols. Vandals have also ripped a gaping hole in the two-story high poster, forcing the gallery to put up a new one. “For Poles, the swastika symbolizes the suffering and death of more than six million Poles. Exhibiting this symbol in the city center is a particularly disgraceful and disgusting act,” said Councilor Norbert Napieraj.
However, a spokeswoman for the Prosecutor’s Office told AFP that no legal action would be taken against the gallery for publicly displaying the poster as “it did not break the law.” Gallery curator Maria Czarnecka was quoted as saying that “we don’t have to remove it as it is a work of art. If it were just a swastika, it would be propagating Nazi symbols. The law allows such symbols to be used in academic and artistic contexts.”

Canadian anti-Semite charged with promoting genocide
(WJC)–In Canada, a Bangladeshi immigrant who had called for “the slaughter of Jews” in postings on the internet has become the first person to be charged with promoting genocide. Salman Hossain, 25, who reportedly left Canada two months ago, was charged with five counts of promoting hatred and advocating or promoting genocide over postings on his website and blog, as well as on a third-party website, Ontario’s Provincial Police said in a statement, adding that Hossain had “willfully promoted hatred and advocated genocide of the Jewish community.”
Until now, Canada has only prosecuted suspects accused of mass atrocities abroad, in countries such as Rwanda. The Canadian government has also deported war crimes suspects to be tried in foreign courts. Hossain, who immigrated to Canada as a child, openly called for “violent regime change in Western nations in order to remove the presence of Jews” and “the slaughter of Jews,” according to reports. He also advocated terrorist attacks in Canada, cheered the killing of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, and urged fellow Muslims to overthrow the “Jewish-run Canadian government.”
In recent online postings, Hossain said he left Canada in May, and is now reportedly in South Asia where he continues to advocate racist violence on his website and blog. “We know that he’s out of the country,” police spokesman Pierre Chamberland told the news agency AFP. “We are working with various government departments to have him brought before justice.”
In 2007, Hossain wrote: “We must never cease in our efforts to eliminate the Jewish people from the face of the earth. Their permanent liquidation and destruction is the only solution.” He added: “A genocide should be perpetrated against the Jewish populations of North America and Europe. Our prime targets will be any major cities with Jews residing in them.”

Sharansky says Orthodox-conversions-only bill divides world Jewry
JERUSALEM (Press Release)–Jewish Agency for Israel Chairman Natan Sharansky said he is deeply disappointed that conversion legislation proposed by MK David Rotem, which includes several controversial clauses, passed today (July 12) in Knesset committee.
“We cannot divide the Jewish People with legislation which many in the Jewish world view as defining them as second class Jews,” Sharansky said. “We are at the beginning of the month of Av, the time when the Temple was destroyed because the Jewish people were busy with internal fighting instead of dealing with real dangers posed by their enemies. Jews abroad are the most loyal supporters of Israel, and stand at the forefront of the fight for Israel’s image around the world.”
“The proposed bill was supposed to have been discussed in detail with world Jewry,” Sharansky added. “I hope the prime minister will send a clear message that this proposed legislation will not move forward without proper discussion and consultation with all those who feel they may be harmed by it.”
