Odds and Ends

The new smaller (size and type) phone book is the latest gag subject around town, but the best is the quote from Bert Eifer, “If you can find your optometrist’s phone number in the new book you don’t need his services.”

This is a little late, but still funny.  In December a friend received a request via phone for a description of the Star of David.  It seems the caller sold made-to-order Christmas stockings and had a customer who desired the Mogen David embroidered on the holiday item instead of the more usual angels, Santa Clauses, and reindeers.

I can’t decide whether that stocking would be a suitable Chanukah gift to a non-Jewish child or more fitting as a Christmas gift to a Jewish child.

Note to Neil Morgan:  Did you know that two cages removed from the Miss Cheatham in that local bank, there is a Miss Penney?”

Sol Price, member of the executive committee of the United Jewish Fund, and active in civic affairs in San Diego, has accepted the chairmanship of the 1954 Combined Jewish Appeal of the United Jewish Fund, Louis Moorsteen, fund president, announced today.

‘I am extremely gratified to be able to announce,” Moorsteen said, “that Sol Price has assumed the top leadership of our 1954 campaign.  His acceptance means that San Diego will continue the topflight, able campaign leadership of the past which has included Irving Friedman, Nathan Baranov, Irvine Schulman. Max Rabinowitz, Louis Steinman, Saul Chenkin, Victor Schulman, Jack O. Gross, Murray D. Goodrich, Carl Esenoff, Rodin Horrow, Morris Douglas, and Milton Roberts.”

“The leadership of Price,” the president continued, “assures us of a speedy and successful drive, and of support on the part of the entire community.”

Mr. Price has long been active in the San Diego Jewish community.  He has served as a member of the Fund board for many years, and has been chairman of the allocations committee.  A veteran campaigner, he served as co-chairman of the 1951 campaign and has participated in every fund campaign since 1939.

Price is a founder of the Federation of Jewish Agencies and a member of the board of the Jewish Social Service Agency.  Because of his great interest in Israel, he has been a leader in the sale of Bonds of Israel and has helped to devise several plans which have stimulated the sale of bonds.

In accepting the chairmanship Mr. Price said, “No one could resist the honor and pleasure of heading a campaign that does so much for so many.  The Jews of San Diego have led the way for many years and this year will be no exception.”

Mr. Price announced that the campaign committee is being formed and that plans are being shaped for a speedy campaign.
